What changed

Every version is free.

1.12.2

Current version
  • The preview shows every video: on videos phones film in HDR the large preview opened empty and see-through; now the video fills it.
  • On small and scaled screens (1366×768 at 150 %, 1920×1080 at 200 %) the list of copies fits the window: its foot no longer hides behind the bar below and the page does not scroll.
  • The preview no longer flickers when it opens under the pointer. A video playing on its card on the right no longer shows a "Play" label on top.

  • Every video fills its preview: videos filmed upright on a phone now play upright and full size (they were small in the middle of a black box). The black bars of films and screen recordings are cut off.
  • The large preview takes the shape of the video or photo: an upright video opens tall, a wide one wide, and it always stays on the screen.
  • More room for the list of copies: the header is two short lines and the tools one row. On a narrow window the numbers give way, not the list. The note on groups without a selection is in the bar at the foot.

  • Videos play their trailer: rest the pointer on a video's picture in the list and short pieces from eight moments across the video play one after another. The strip below shows which piece is playing, the clock in the corner where it is in the video (0:12 / 0:40).
  • The cards on the right play it too while the pointer is on a video's picture: you see what a video holds without opening it.

  • Before you delete, every photo, video and song shows itself: its own picture on its rows (a video frame, a song's cover), sharp and large while the pointer rests on it. The deletion confirmation shows pictures too.
  • Listen to songs from the list: the blue button on a song's picture plays it, another click stops it. A video's picture opens it in your player.
  • A wider, roomier list of copies: the space to free and the counts sit beside the title on one line, and the scroll bar is wider and easier to see.
  • Skipped files in plain words: what was not looked at and why, with "Change in Settings" or "Scan again" where they help.
  • A new icon: the copy detective.

  • DupeSafe is now completely free: no trial period, no license key, nothing to buy. Deleting, recovery and the Google Photos merge are open to everyone.
  • If you like it, you can support its development with "Buy us a coffee" (in the sidebar and in Settings > About).
  • The program goes online only to check for new versions; no device code or license data is sent.

  • Updates show up at once: DupeSafe asks for a new version at every start and every 4 hours while it is open (it used to be once a day). Without internet it tries again half an hour later.
  • The home page shows the download: "Downloading the new version · 40%", then "Update ready · Update".
  • Settings > General > "Check now": asks for a new version at once and says what it found.

  • Much faster scans: programs' own folders (node_modules, .git, Python environments, caches) are not scanned; deleting "copies" in them breaks the program. Similar photos are compared 10 times faster, with the same results.
  • Twice as fast deletion: files go to the Recycle Bin two groups at a time. Every file is still locked, verified and proven to be in the bin.
  • A tidy look at every window size: however narrow you make the window, the pages fit, also with half or a quarter of the screen. The program opens to suit your screen and comes back at the size you left it.
  • Text and button size: follows Windows' text size setting; Settings > General also offers 90 % to 150 %.
  • A clear menu: Delete duplicates, Duplicates found, Recover deleted files. Ctrl+1…6 switch between the pages.

1.8.1

  • Automatic updates: a new version downloads in the background and installs when DupeSafe closes. "Update" on the home page installs it right away; the program opens again in the new version.
  • Only versions signed by DupeSafe are installed; the file is verified when it downloads and again right before it installs. Nothing updates while a scan, a deletion or a recovery is running.
  • Works for the installed, portable and Mac versions. To turn it off: Settings > General > "Install updates automatically"; a new version is then offered with "Download".

  • A new look: our own icon set, clean screens, little and short text. Questions and warnings share the same design, and their buttons say what they do ("Undo", "Cancel").
  • A summary and a one-click Smart clean-up when the scan ends. In the results, the kinds of copies on the left, the groups in the middle and the copies side by side with large previews on the right; copies are named by the folders that tell them apart ("Backup › Camera").
  • Undo everywhere: in one click on the deletion result, later from History. Files that come back return to the list too.
  • Move to a folder instead of deleting: the copies wait in a folder you choose and can be put back any time.
  • Best shot among similar photos: the sharpest one is marked; keep it if you like and the others are selected.
  • Automatic scan: weekly or monthly on its own, with a notification when copies are found (Settings > Scan).
  • Review with the keyboard: K keeps this copy and moves to the next group; Space, Page Up/Down, Delete and Ctrl+F work too.
  • Find copies of a file: drag files in or pick them; resized copies of pictures are found too. On Windows a right-click in Explorer is enough.
  • On a Mac the Photos library is scanned; its copies go into an album for you to delete in Photos.
  • A shorter first-start guide; the program opens in the system's language (Turkish or English). A drive taken out no longer stops a scan: it goes on with the other places.

1.7.0

  • A redesigned interface: a new home page, big and clear choice cards, a "Keep / To delete" label on every file, simpler settings. The same look in light and dark, from Windows 8 to 11 and on a Mac.
  • New: find copies of a file. Checks whether the files you pick have exact copies anywhere on the computer, even under other names; your file is kept and its copies are marked. Dragging files onto the window works too.
  • A progress ring and stages while scanning: listing, comparing, verifying, results.
  • Results are listed card by card; how much space can be freed and what kind of copies were found are shown at the top with a chart.
  • Click a drive on the home page to scan all of it.

  • A step-by-step guide on the first start shows what to click. It opens again from the "How to use?" button.
  • A simpler scan page: folders like Pictures, Documents and Downloads are one click away; the fine-tuning waits under "Advanced options".
  • On small screens (such as 1366 × 768 laptops) the "Start scan" button is always in view; every page fits the screen.
  • Much faster deleting on Windows: files go to the Recycle Bin in batches, and a full Recycle Bin no longer slows it down (about ten times faster than before). Every file is still verified one by one.
  • Scanning compares large photo libraries much faster; on hard disks files are read in the order they lie on the disk, and photos are read in one pass.
  • Very large result lists no longer freeze the window: the selection is worked out in the background.
  • Larger, easier-to-read text and clearer colours.
  • The free trial is now 30 days.

  • Mac edition: runs on Apple silicon and Intel Macs, with recovery from USB drives and memory cards, similar-video scans and Google Photos merging.
  • On a Mac, the Photos library and app packages are never scanned into or deleted from; deleted files go to the Trash.
  • A license key now activates on one computer; to move it, choose "Remove from this device" on the old one.
  • The Recycle Bin and system folders of drives used on Windows are skipped on a Mac as well.
